Chumbawamba es una banda inglesa que a lo largo de sus casi 30 años de existencia, ha realizado una gran variedad de estilos musicales. Desde el punk rock anarquista hasta la música dance o folk.

[Biografía]

Sus inicios se remontan al año 1982, el grupo se compondría por Allan "Boff" Whalley, Danbert Nobacon, Midge y Tomi. Todos ellos provenían de las bandas "The Passion Killers" y "Chimp Eats Bananas".

Al igual que en sus anteriores proyectos, comienzan tocando punk rock de índole anarquista influenciado por los grupos The Fall y Crass donde tocan en conciertos defendiendo los derechos sociales y de los animales. El nombre Chumbawamba no significa nada, como ellos mismos dicen en su web "queríamos tener un nombre no común ya que las bandas de aquella época tenían nombres muy comunes."

Los cambios musicales de la banda se notan con cada disco nuevo. Dos ejemplos se ven en el disco "English Rebel Songs 1381-1914" de 1988 donde tocan folk a capela o el disco "Slap!" de 1991 donde cambian el estilo musical por el dance, dejando atrás sus letras de conciencia social y marcándose en una línea mucho más pop.

Con el paso de los años y su música evolucionando a un cada vez más techno o world music, Chumbawamba firma un contrato discográfico con EMI, algo muy criticado y mal visto por sus seguidores. Curiosamente la banda participó en un recopilatorio cuyo título era "Fuck EMI " de 1989. Chumbawamba se excusó diciendo que EMI había cortado unos años antes un contrato que tenía con una empresa armamentística.

El grupo Oi Polloi con el que Chumbawamba había participado años atrás sacó un EP de título "anti-Chumbawamba" por el cambio en su actitud musical.

Un éxito notable lo tuvieron después de firmar con EMI con el disco "Tubthumping" cuya canción con el mismo título fue la sintonía oficial del mundial de fútbol de Francia en 1998.

A pesar de sus variaciones musicales actualmente tocan folk con canciones protesta como el tema "On Ebay" criticando el robo de reliquias durante la guerra de Irak que las cuales eran vendidas por internet.

A día de hoy siguen en activo.
